Exactly why dog lovers have this preconceived notion that small breed pups are more challenging to discipline than medium sized or large breed dogs, I will never be able to comprehend. Housebreaking a puppy, no matter what its size should not be problematic.

Small dog training, is not different from training a puppy of any other size. Although training any dog will have its peculiarities, pertaining to its breed, practically all other elements remain exactly the same, and the technique to training the dog should remain the same, irrespective its size.

However, I will stray from the rule here, and say yes to the argument that small dog training may present difficulties in two aspects, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Even so, this is not because the fact that it is a small breed dog, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner.

If a small breed dog is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a smallish breed pup cannot be toilet trained or poses complications in being crate trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this situation. Let us examine how and why.

Aggression.

Smaller dogs are enjoyed because they are sweet, they are like playthings. Owners take pleasure in having their dog sit on their laps. This specific indulgence is where the problem starts. The natural aggressive nature of the puppy, is to take ownership over its sector, its food, even its leader; all dogs strive to be the alpha dog.

It is the ruthless streak in the canine animal that causes it to get on to the lap of its mistress, specially when there are lots of individuals present in the room.

This is a outright act of ruthlessness. Instead of admonishing the animal, every owner with the exception of no one, would hug the puppy, despite the fact it jumped on to their lap uninvited, encouraging the aggressive streak in the puppy. In this way the owner has accepted the dog's inherent need to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting upset at a much bigger dog is another clear act of hostility. To the owner, and even the people around, this is viewed as cute, mainly because one dog is little while the other is big. Most owners praise the pup instead of scolding it, when it displays this aggression to a larger dog.

The above mentioned are but instances as to why small size breed dogs are aggressive, and definitely not because small dog training is problematic.

Potty Training.

Owners tend to haul their small pets around no matter where they go, even while they are at home and that makes it very difficult to bathroom train them

It comes natural to the owners of small breed dogs to lug the animal to the spot where the pooch should eliminate itself and then cart it back into the house.

It is this routine of carrying the pup to its appointed toilet area that is the cause of all problems. In addition, ever since the pup is normally carried around so much it has no way of it informing or cautioning the owner that it has to poop.

Small dog training starts with treating the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be taken to their potty area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their tiny breed dogs they would have no troubles in training them.

Dog crate training, is the most interesting part of canine training, and so it can be, even in Small Dog Training.
