Donald used to brag to his buddies how he could work at a difficult and full-time job and get drunk virtually every night. Unfortunately, after involving himself in this destructive lifestyle for around seven years, he started to observe numerous alcohol related problems.

For example, he had a very difficult time getting up for work because he felt so tired when he awoke. Furthermore, most mornings Donald suffered through an awful hangover. In short, the combination of his lack of get-up-and-go and his hangovers did not make it easy for him to get up and feel like he wanted to go to work. To make matters worse, he recently got his third driving under the influence arrest in the past four months.

To complicate things further, at work his last two performance evaluations were less than satisfactory. And lastly, his four-and-a-half-year relationship with his girlfriend had deteriorated due to his financial difficulties, lack of patience, angry outbursts, and his depression.

Though Donald was only twenty-eight years old, he frankly began to look like he was in his late thirties. Unfortunately, this is what abusive and careless drinking can do to an individual. And in truth he realized that he was suffering from the negative effects of alcohol addiction or alcohol abuse and that he was too young to waste his life on abusive and excessive drinking. So at first he tried to drink in moderation. Sadly, he soon understood that he lost all control after consuming his first drink. Due to the fact that this was an incident that was repeated over and over again, this obviously troubled him a great deal. In fact, he started to wonder if he was displaying some of the stages of alcoholism.

After going over his alcohol drinking problems and his irresponsible and hazardous drinking with his girlfriend, he finally decided to schedule an appointment to see his healthcare practitioner. When Donald saw his doctor, he openly mentioned that he has been abusing alcohol, that he may be exhibiting behavior characteristic of the various alcoholism stages, and that he wants to abstain from drinking. He then declared that drinking in moderation does not seem to work for him and consequently, he wants to learn how he can live an alcohol-free life.

Donald also told his healthcare professional about his depression and how this mental health issue was negatively influencing his relationship with his girlfriend. His family doctor referred Donald to Doctor Lenson, a drug and alcohol addiction therapist, who persuaded Donald to enroll in an alcohol and drug rehabilitation facility as an in-patient for alcohol detoxification and alcohol treatment. Fortunately, Donald would also be able to get treatment for his depression at this facility.

After five months of rigorous treatment, Donald left the residential treatment center and continued his recovery via outpatient counseling and via going to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Encouraged to change his life in a more positive direction, Donald joined a fitness center and started working out two or three times per week. Within five months Donald was a new man. He was not depressed anymore, he was in shape, he was eating nutritious meals, and most significant of all, he remained sober for numerous months. He also became more patient, he did not resort to angry outbursts, and he became a more loving person in his relationship with his lady friend. Stated briefly, getting and staying sober was the best decision Donald had ever made.
