Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most financially challenged parochial high school in the district. Even though she had been teaching for only three years, she had already gained a reputation as a teacher with instructional techniques that motivated and encouraged students to learn and to think.

For instance, one Friday afternoon at 1:00 she addressed the students in her class and said the following: "For the next four or five days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a general standpoint and we are also going to learn about several of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed viewpoint."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will beyond doubt establish that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a drinker exhibits, the greater the probability that she or he is a person who is alcohol dependent."

Miss Jackson then informed the the students that each person would be responsible for investigating four alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the rest of the class via a twenty-five minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to go over the list and rank the top nine alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After around ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to the students in her classroom that after she tallies the numbers, she will reveal her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked the students in her classroom to look over the information she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, questions, or issues. Within 40 or 50 seconds, almost every pupil in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was noticeable that the pupils had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For example, just about every pupil had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, that is, "Do you feel really nauseous when you quit drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told her pupils why this answer was the most accurate sign of alcohol dependency. She underscored the fact that the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.

Essentially this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent all of a sudden quits drinking, she or he will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol addicted individual, the students started to understand the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the excitement manifested by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had encouraged and motivated her students to stop and think about a critical social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
